Lolita, one of only two teachers actually certified to teach by Joseph Pilates, was characteristically accurate in her description. Rael’s dedication to, and passion for, Pilates are legendary, and he manages to generate a similar passion in whomever he is teaching. The atmosphere in Rael’s classes is electric; more like that of a rock concert than a fitness session.
Just as renowned as Rael’s enthusiasm, is his technique. Described by Lolita as “undoubtedly the best mover amongst the males,” Rael has put his personal stamp on the practice of Pilates over the past three decades. His control is flawless, his athleticism unparalleled and his physical range phenomenal for a person now in the sixth decade of his life.
Passion and technique are only two of the characteristics that have made Rael one of the modern-day Pilates icons. Others are his natural aptitude for teaching and his restless intelligence. Pilates, for Rael, is as much a cerebral as a physical activity. Doing it is not enough; he needs to know the how and the why – and figure out ways to do it better.
It was not by chance that Kathy Grant, the other teacher certified by Joseph Pilates, described Rael as “the male that Mr. Pilates wished for to continue his work.” Like Joe, Rael is an innovator; a born thinker and creator. That pioneering quality has left an indelible mark on the universal practice of Pilates, ranging from the BASI® Block System, a unique method of categorizing Pilates exercises devised by Rael, to the game-changing AVALON® line of equipment.
Perhaps the most profound advance in apparatus design since the days of Joseph Pilates, the AVALON System, which Rael designed, adds resistance to apparatus that didn’t have it previously and expands the resistance and choreographic capabilities of those that did. It also standardizes resistance settings and nomenclature for the first time. As a result, the range of the equipment has been enhanced considerably and many dozens of new exercises have been added to the Pilates repertoire.
Born in South Africa and educated in Israel and England, Rael has a Bachelor of Education degree and teaching credentials from Israel's prestigious Wingate Institute, and a Master of Arts degree in Dance from the University of Surrey, England.
His early Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman, and several of the first-generation Pilates teachers who are commonly known as the Elders. To Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry and Lolita San Miguel, Rael owes a debt of gratitude for the inspiration and friendship that have guided his career.
In 1989, while directing the dance department at a performing arts college in Australia, Rael founded Body Arts and Science International®, a teacher training academy dedicated to introducing curriculum-based studies and academic rigor into the largely informal and unfettered field of Pilates instruction. In the years since, he has been instrumental in establishing the academic validity of Pilates studies.
Through Rael’s unstinting efforts, BASI Pilates, as it is commonly known, has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. It is currently represented in 20 countries and over 100 locations and has a select faculty of over 30 highly-qualified teachers.
Rael is the author of Pilates, the definitive book on the method, and the authoratitive Pilates Anatomy (with Karen Clippinger.) He has published a series of Movement Analysis Workbooks on all the major Pilates apparatus, produced DVDs and created Pilates Interactive™, a groundbreaking online Pilates resource. Jennifer Pearlstein came to Pilates with a BA from UC Davis and more than 12 years in the fitness industry. She is a Senior Faculty member at BASI Pilates, where she has been on staff since 2001. She is a highly sought-after instructor, traveling extensively, both domestically and internationally, to teach a variety of training courses. Her travels have taken her to Austria, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Japan, Indonesia and Spain, as well as cities across the U.S.
Jennifer is a strong advocate for the profession. She has taught at the Method Alliance Conference and she pioneered the first Pilates program at the Athletic Club for Woman in Newport Beach, California. In addition to teaching Pilates and training instructors, Jennifer is a certified personal trainer and self-described yoga addict. One of her specialty areas is working with women and dealing with the issues they encounter as they age.
Jessica has always enjoyed a very active lifestyle, growing up in the sunny coastal city of Laguna Beach. She attended Chapman University and was awarded degrees in both Business and Film Production.
Jessica discovered Pilates following a back injury, which caused significant pain that limited her mobility. She had to re-learn how to walk, sit and stand. She began to see life changing results and that is when she decided to quit her full time job in Marketing and pursue her Pilates Career. She attended Body Arts Science International (BASI) Pilates School, with Constance Holder and Rael Isacowitz, where she completed over 500 hours of training. She also has a Pre/Postnatal Pilates Certificate from The Center for Women’s Fitness by Carolyne Anthony.
Jessica enjoys working with clients who have suffered an injury and need rehabilitated attention, as well as clients who pursue Pilates for health and wellness. For fun she enjoys tennis, golf and tap dance.

Jill Kerry studied dance for over 15 years. She toured nationally and internationally with an entertainment company and concurrently earned her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach.
In 1993, as a result of a dance injury, Jill was introduced to Pilates as a form of rehabilitation. In 1998 she completed a six-month, teacher training program in the Pilates method, through Body Arts and Science in Costa Mesa, California and has since taught Pilates in the On Center Conditioning studio. Jill is a wife and a mother of three children.
Lisa Hubbard is a Senior Faculty Member for the world renowned BASI Pilates® and is the Founder of Rhythm Pilates™. She is internationally recognized as a Pilates figure in the industry and has been featured in many award winning Pilates projects, including DVDs, textbooks and is a second-time cover girl for Pilates Style Magazine®. She has perpetuated her practice and knowledge of the method for over fifteen years and teaching for over thirteen. In addition to her dance background, she holds certifications in GYROTONIC®, Yoga and owns a successful private Pilates studio in Southern California. Dan is a retired engineering professional; he enjoys teaching Pilates as a second career and employing his sense of humor and communication skills while instructing and edifying clients in the Pilates Method. Dan is a graduate of the BASI Pilates Comprehensive Teacher Training Program, he has received certifications through the PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) and through Carolyne Anthony with The Center for Women's Fitness to teach Pilates to prenatal and postnatal clients. Teaching Pilates for Dan has been very rewarding thanks to feedback from his clients that they appreciate the Pilates Method and feel enriched after each session and look forward to their next session. Dan is experienced in teaching clients of all ages from their early 20's to clients in their golden years.

Yurika has been practicing Pilates for several years. Its holistic, mind and body approach has been just the right thing to keep her going as a mom with busy children.
As once-a-week session became more frequent, her inquisitive nature finally brought her to BASI Pilates in 2008, where she was certified as an instructor and remained at its studio to work with her clients.
Not only she loves teaching and watching how her clients transform their lives through Pilates, but also enjoys her own regular training and attending workshops to expand her knowledge farther.
